Aquaporin membranes for desalination and potable re-use

For municipal use, Aquaporin Inside® Reverse Osmosis and Forward Osmosis membranes enable potable reuse of wastewater through the efficiency of aquaporin proteins and can improve desalination economics.

Increasing the efficiency of RO membranes in desalination plants will enable the lowering of energy consumption – a great challenge of RO desalination plants today, and a challenge where aquaporin proteins can make a difference.

Aquaporin Inside® Reverse Osmosis membranes with improved water flux and rejections for e.g. borate will drastically improve desalination economics and product quality. Forward Osmosis is also being investigated for desalination purposes in a number of process concepts.

Water for potable reuse
Aquaporin Inside® Reverse Osmosis
With Aquaporin Inside® Reverse Osmosis membranes, water treatment can be done with lower energy consumption compared to conventional membrane technology. The benefit comes from the aquaporin proteins which are very efficient in transporting water. This enables the water treatment plant to increase the capacity of treated wastewater without increasing the energy consumption, or remaining at the same capacity level while lowering the energy consumption. At the same time, Aquaporin membranes has the potential to remove also small, neutral compounds such as micro pollutants/trace organics, improving re-use water quality.

Aquaporin Inside® Forward Osmosis
The Aquaporin Inside™ Forward Osmosis membrane adds a solution to the increasing challenges of accumulated micro pollutants in the aquatic environment. Aquaporin Inside® Forward Osmosis membranes show very high rejection rates of small drug molecules and other trace organics due to the high selectivity of the aquaporin protein towards water. A forward osmosis process can treat difficult and high-fouling streams directly to re-use quality, with very little pre-treatment.
