How to reduce your bottled water consumption

Every minute, millions of plastic bottles contribute to an ever-growing amount of plastic waste, which is not only bad for the planet, but also for our well-being. The good news is that you can cut back on bottled water without having to compromise safety, taste or convenience.

For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastic bottles have continued to rise, and the trend seems to continue. In 2017, a million plastic bottles were sold every single minute, and sales were predicted to reach more than half a trillion annually by 2021.

More plastic than fish in the ocean

While plastic bottles may be convenient, they present a huge problem for the global environment, especially in the oceans. Around 150 million tons of plastic are already floating in our oceans - with an additional eight million tons entering the water each year, according to the World Economic Forum.

It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by weight if current rates of plastic dumping hold.

Policymakers and the public have now realized that pollution from plastic is an urgent problem and one of the most pressing environmental issues the world needs to address. In the Paris Agreement objectives on climate change, reducing the consumption of bottled water from 100 to 88 liters per year by 2050 is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.2 million tons CO2.

Kicking the plastic habit

So, what can you do to reduce plastic consumption and become more sustainable? The answer may be to focus on some of the more self-centered concerns that are likely to stand in the way of your good intentions of helping the environment.

Many people choose bottled water because they prefer the taste of it or feel that the water is cleaner and purer than the tap water. Several scientific studies indicate that concerns about health, taste, and water quality are the main reasons why people choose bottled water and that environmental concerns are less important.

In addition, perceived barriers such as having to make lifestyle changes and lack of available alternatives make people even less likely to reduce their consumption of bottled water.

In other words, if you want to kick your plastic water bottle habit, you must have easy access to a source of water that you can trust to be safe and pleasant to drink.

Filtering water at home

Although this may seem hard to achieve, there is an alternate, more environmentally friendly solution which is often overlooked in this debate – water purification. Household water purification ensures clean and safe drinking water without consuming plastic.

A home water purification system can remove a wide range of impurities such as bacteria, viruses, pesticides, chlorine, and odor from the drinking water - leaving you with nothing but clean, safe and great tasting drinking water right from your tap. And with a simple investment in a reusable water bottle, you can carry your purified drinking water everywhere you go.

At Aquaporin we take responsibility for a greener planet. With innovative water technologies, we enable people to get clean drinking water straight from the tap.
